The author Laurence Sterne was born 308 years ago today in County Tipperary, Ireland. Sterne is best known for his novel "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman", published in nine volumes from 1759 to 1767. Sterne was Vicar of Sutton-on-the-Forest from 1741 before being made Perpetual Curate of Coxwold in North Yorkshire where he named his home "Shandy Hall".

The Laurence Sterne Trust organised events at Shandy Hall in celebration of the 300th anniversary.
