Death of 2nd Earl of Macclesfield
Saturday, 17th March 1764
George Parker, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield died this day in 1764. He was an astronomer and had been prominent in effecting the change over from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1752. This move brought the British calendar into line with the rest of Europe, but was unpopular with the public who felt they had lost eleven days of their lives.
