Today is Trafalgar day; the 214th anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
In this battle off the Spanish coast the Royal Navy with 33 ships defeated 44 French and Spanish ships. Admiral Lord Nelson's strategy of breaking the enemy line into three is thought to have been the key to the British victory. Nelson lost his life during the battle when he was shot by a marksman from the French ship Redoubtable.
