Inigo Jones was born this day in 1573 in London. He was the architect of the Queen's House in Greenwich and the Banqueting House in Whitehall, the first convincingly classical buildings in England. Having made a tour of Italy in 1613 he was particularly influenced by the work of Andrea Palladio; The style of "Palladian" classicism he developed was an influence on British architecture for the next two centuries. Jones' designs were admired and republished by William Kent in the eighteenth century.
