Saturday, 14th July 1804

Mary Parry died this day in 1804 at the age of 44. She is commemorated by an elegant monument in the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Cottingham. The inscription tells us rather more about Mary's male relatives than it does about the lady herself, it reads:

SACRED

to the memory of

Mrs. MARY PARRY

wife of EDWARD PARRY Esq.

(one of the DIRECTORS of the

Hon: EAST INDIA COMPANY,)

and daughter of the late

JOHN HORNER Esq.

of KINGSTON upon HULL:

She departed this life

the 14th of July 1804

Aged 44.

Blessed are the dead

who die in the Lord.

Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Cottingham, East Yorkshire

Tower of St Mary the Virgin Cottingham.

The oldest parts of the Cottingham's parish church date from the early fourteenth century; the west window exhibits the flowing lines of the Curvilinear style favoured by Yorkshire masons at that time.
